“Legends on Blood” meeting

Meeting with Professor Joanna Tokarska-Bakir will offer a critical take on blood libels (i.e. supposed host desecration and Jews kidnapping Christian children) and consequences of such superstitions – both in the past and today. It will be an opportunity to acquaint ourselves with the outcome of research on how legends on blood function in social consciousness.

During the meeting A Pole in the Wardrobe (Polak w szafie, 2007) will be screened. It is a film made by Artur Żmijewski after he had returned from fieldwork conducted in Sandomierz under Professor Tokarska-Bakir’s supervision. The film is an attempt on analyzing stories collected by the researchers. In the space created by Artur Żmijewski at the Centre for Contemporary Art students try to determine what should be done with Karol de Prevot’s painting from Sandomierz cathedral which portrays Jews performing the so-called ritual murder on Christian children.

We invite you to a post-screening discussion.
