Report: "Warsaw – a City of Two Uprisings"

On July 29, 2013, a debate entitled “Warsaw – a City of Two Uprisings”, organized in cooperation with the Warsaw Rising Museum as part of the commemoration of the 69th anniversary of the Warsaw Rising, was held at the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

The debate provided a unique opportunity to consider, once more, following the recent 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the two wartime insurgencies that have deeply marked and shaped the identity of Poles and Jews. Panelists included: Dr. Mikołaj Mirowski, historian and publicist, Dr. Magdalena Gawin, Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences, Maria Ferenc, coordinator of the Holocaust gallery, Museum of the History of Polish Jews Core Exhibition, Association of the Jewish Historical Institute of Poland, Col Edmund Baranowski, participant of the Warsaw Rising, Vice-President of the Union of Warsaw Insurgents, Secretary General of the Foundation for Polish-German Reconciliation Council, member of the Warsaw Rising Museum Council of Trustees. The meeting was moderated by Dawid Wildstein.

A large and outspoken audience had gathered for the debate. The issues raised included the way in which each of the uprisings was presented under the communist regime, the participation of Jews in the Warsaw Rising, similarities and differences between the risings as well as their role in shaping historical consciousness and national identities
