A walk along the traces of commemoration: the murals of Muranów
Muranów, a housing development built upon the ruins of the Warsaw ghetto, has recently gained recognition as an open-air art gallery. In the last few years, nine large pieces of artwork were painted in the gateways and on building walls.
Some of them, such as the mural of Ludwik Zamenhof, Janusz Korczak or Marek Edelman, are closely related to the history of the district; others, more abstract ones, such as the Etam Cru mural at Dzielna Steet, add a splash of colour to the local landscape.
On 5 August, join us as we take a walk along the mural trail to discover Muranów from a different perspective through its backstreets and gateways. You will learn the story of the Muranów women depicted in a painting in a gate passage at Nowolipie Street, and other ones who could have also been painted there, such as the avant-garde artist Teresa Żarnower.
You will hear about the joint efforts that made it possible to paint the mural of Marek Edelman on a wall of a classical-style building in Nowolipki on the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. You will also learn why the mural painted by Anna Koźbiel and Adam Walas dedicated to Ludwik Zamenhof depicts so many different figures, including Bruno Schulz, the girls of Nowolipki or Clint Eastwood.
You will have the chance to solve other mysteries, too: what is Józef Szanajca doing on a mural dedicated to the architect Bohdan Lachert, the author of the development plan for the south part of Muranów? What is the connection between the owl painted by Swanski and Nowolipki Street?
The walk will be guided by Maciej Mahler.
Date: 6 August, 06h00 PM - 08h00 PM; Meeting point: main entrance to the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, ul. Anielewicza 6.
The walk will be guided in English, participation is free; advance booking required at: 22 47 10 301.
