August 2, 2024, marked an important day for Roma and Sinti communities worldwide. Known as European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day officially established by the European Parliament in 2015, this date commemorates the genocide of Roma and Sinti. This year, it held special significance as it marked the 80th anniversary of the liquidation of the so-called "Gypsy camp" at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

But how much attention did this important anniversary actually receive in European media, or in the public programming of cultural and educational institutions?

This year, POLIN Museum, in collaboration with three partner organizations: European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture, Foundation Towards Dialogue, and Museum of Romani Culture, launched an educational program specifically for cultural sector professionals and educators.

Participants from Poland, Germany, Czechia, and other European countries, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences, came together to work in teams and develop concepts for various types of commemoration practices. Based on their interests and disciplines, participants worked with topics such as commemoration in public spaces, digital activism and social media, educational activities for the general public, training for professional groups and art as a form of commemoration.

The concepts extended beyond raising awareness of this historical event; they also sought to address present-day issues, such as anti-Roma discrimination, violence and prejudices, challenging potential audience to confront difficult questions, foster greater understanding, and advocate for respect and inclusion for Roma communities.

Register and we will send you a link to the Zoom meeting.
