What languages dominated on the streets of prewar Warsaw? What languages were shop signboards in? Which words from the prewar vernacular are we using today?

We would like to invite you to a lecture accompanying the Warszawa, Warsze exhibition, during which we will take a closer look at the multicultural prewar capital from the point of view of language. Special attention will be paid to the Yiddish language and its functioning alongside Polish; their correlation and borrowings will also be discussed.

The lecture will be delivered by Dr Karolina Szymaniak, Yiddish and literary scholar, translator, editor, Yiddish language teacher. Her research involves modern Yiddish literature, modernism, avant-garde and literature written by women.

Admission to the lecture is free.

The lecture will be translated into English.

We would also like to invite you to our incoming events:

  • 28 June, 1 pm: creative writing workshop “Literary Yiddish”
  • 29 June, 11 am: language workshop: Esperanto, Hebrew and Yiddish

The “Own-Alien-Other” cycle is being realized as part of the “Jewish Cultural Heritage” project, “Faces of Diversity” component.
