Finalists of 2023 POLIN Award: Małgorzata K. Frąckiewicz, Łomża
A PhD holder in Arts and Humanities, linguist, researcher of surnames, and promoter of the cultural identity of the inhabitants of the historical Łomża region, Dr Frąckiewicz serves as Vice-President of the Vagas Łomża Scientific Society and President of the Polish Historical Society, Łomża Branch. She is the author of dictionaries and catalogues of surnames of residents of the Łomża region, including places like Łomża, Jedwabne, Grabowo, Ostrow Mazowiecka, Rutek-Kossaków, Wysokie Mazowieckie, and the borderland between Mazovia and Podlasie.
Dr Frąckiewicz has conducted seven original research and popularization projects, resulting in the compilation of source materials and their editing, as well as publications highlighting the cultural heritage and historical identity of the Łomża region and its inhabitants over the centuries.
Małgorzata Frąckiewicz is the author of a monograph titled "Antroponimia Żydów łomżyńskich w kontekście językowo-kulturowym" [Anthroponymy of Łomża Jews in the Linguistic-Cultural Context], presenting thousands of surnames of Łomża Jews, documenting and attesting to the once lively, dynamic, and creative presence of Jews in the Łomża region. She initiated and coordinated the work of a team, and led to the publication of successive pinkasim (memorial volumes) for Łomża, Białystok, Ciechanowiec, Jedwabne, Stawisk, Wysokie Mazowieckie, and Zambrów. Under her editorial supervision, the yizkor books for Ostrów Mazowiecka, Siedlce, and Szczuczyn have been prepared for printing, while the pinkasim for Tykocin, Sokół, Czyżew, and Kolno are currently being translated. A popular website: www.name.lomza.pl is among Dr Frąckiewicz’s achievements; along with her team, she posts various materials and studies, as well as biographies and archival sources related to Łomża Jews.
Małgorzata was also responsible for the scholarly edition of Katalog nazwisk mieszkańców parafii "Ostrów Mazowiecka z XIX i pocz. XX wieku" [Catalogue of Surnames of the Inhabitants of the Parish of Ostrów Mazowiecka from the 19th and early 20th centuries], which includes the Jewish community and also part of the Evangelical one. She offers genealogical-onomastic consultations for the descendants of Łomża Jews from the USA, Israel, Canada, Cuba, and Uruguay. She initiated and curated the exhibition titled Ogrody pamięci [Gardens of Memory], presenting photographs and descriptions from the Łomża memorial books, thus sharing the cultural heritage and identity of the Łomża region, constructed over the centuries by the community of Polish Jews, including very many economically active inhabitants of towns and villages of this historical land.
