Polish wooden synagogues and American modern art – one can hardly conceive of two worlds more apart. And yet it was the architecture of no longer extant synagogues from the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth that inspired the abstractionist Frank Stella to create his famous relief series, Polish Villages.

The catalogue of the exhibition Frank Stella and Synagogues of Historic Poland shows how this came about. The volume includes an interview with the architect and scholar of wooden synagogue architecture Maria Piechotka, essays by experts, including the famous historian of contemporary art Andrzej Turowski, and the exhibition’s curator Artur Tanikowski. Also featured are reproductions of works by Frank Stella and prewar photographs and drawings of wooden synagogues.
