Frank Stella and Synagogues of Historic Poland – exhibition catalogue
Polish wooden synagogues and American contemporary art – two worlds which, one might initially think, could not be further apart. And yet it is the architecture of the now-defunct synagogues of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth which inspired the abstractionist artist Frank Stella to create the famous series of reliefs entitled "Polish Village".
The Frank Stella and Synagogues of Historic Poland exhibition catalogue offers us a glimpse into how it actually happened. The catalogue includes, among others, an interview with Maria Piechotkowa, architect and researcher into the world of old synagogues, articles by various experts, including Professor Andrzej Turowski, famous contemporary art historian, and Dr Artur Tanikowski, curator of the exhibition. Also included are reproductions of the works of Frank Stella as well as photos and drawings of pre-war wooden synagogues.
