Sturdivant Adams

Sturdivant’s music has reached international audiences throughout Europe and the United States. The winner of the 2018 UK national Young Composers’ Competition sponsored by the Royal Northern Sinfonia, his music has been premiered or recorded by the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra for the Earth, the Royal Northern Sinfonia, and members of the LA Philharmonic Orchestra.

Born in San Francisco in 1993, Sturdivant developed an early interest in music when he started studying piano at a young age, continuing his study of both classical (San Francisco Music Conservatory) and jazz piano (California Jazz Conservatory) over the next 20 years.

Sturdivant holds an MPhil with Distinction in Music Composition from the University of Oxford (Worcester College), where he studied with composer Robert Saxton, and a BA magna cum laude from Columbia University. While at Oxford, he was also mentored by Tony Award-Winning composer Claude-Michel Schönberg (Les Misérables).

In 2017, Sturdivant’s Symphony 2 was commissioned by POLIN Museum (2016 European Museum of the Year Award), thanks to the support of two Distinguished Benefactors - Tomek Ulatowski & Ygal Ozechov. It will premiere in February 2019 at the POLIN Music Festival in Warsaw, Poland.

In the years 2010-2016 Sturdivant founded and ran a music arranging and transcription business, working for over a half dozen GRAMMY award-winning and nominated artists including Terri Lyne Carrington, Eric Harland, Taylor Eigsti, Julian Lage, Walter Smith III and Ambrose Akinmusire.

Sturdivant is currently pursuing Master’s degree in Screen Scoring at USC Thornton in Los Angeles, where he studies with Hollywood composers Bruce Broughton (Rescuers Down Under, Lost in Space, Silverado), Christopher Young (Hellraiser, Spider-Man 3, The Grudge), Eric Schmidt (Tom & Jerry and the Magic Ring), and Garry Schyman (Bioshock series, Dante’s Inferno, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor).
