The end of the commemorations of the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising will be marked by a special concert conducted and performed by Jerzy Maksymiuk. It is a musical tribute to all those who perished in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and a commemoration of the destruction of the Great Synagogue in Warsaw.

Jerzy Maksymiuk, when writing these pieces of music, expressed his grief and kinship with the victims of suffering. The impulse and direct inspiration for writing the pieces in the “Heart Lamentation” concert, was news of the destruction of Jewish monuments in Poland.

The story, sung, is told in both Polish and Yiddish.

The author writes:

– “We still have a problem with tolerance, which is why I wrote this piece. I was influenced by the destruction of Jewish monuments in Poland. We need to deal with, and prevent anti-Semitism. It is our obligation. Writing this piece I wanted to express my kinship with those who are suffering. The things that happened created in me a great anguish. Something like this should never have happened.

On “Heart Lamentation”:

– “This isn’t a recounting of events, but rather my voice, my reaction to what’s happening. It is made up of 9 parts. The main part is a prayer. I’ve had its outline in my head for some time. Then the soprano enters, who sings a couple of sentences in Polish and Yiddish. To conclude, I intended to have a lullaby, to release everyone’s emotions. However, I changed it to a hymn, where I express my grief that these horrible things could have occurred. When the hymn reaches its most dynamic part, there are 7 beats, a warning, “never again”.  In this piece there are also warmer moments, reflections and hope, that things can be different.”
