I. L. Peretz and his Circle - Academic Conference

International Academic Conference “I. L. Peretz and his Circle”, 7-10 September 2015, Warsaw - Zamość

>>Program of the conference<<

In April 1915, 100 years ago, Yitschok Leybush Peretz, an eminent Yiddish writer regarded as the father of Yiddish literature, passed away in Warsaw. To commemorate the anniversary, POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, Polish Society of Yiddish Studies, Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage and International Centre for Research on the History and Cultural Heritage of Jews of Central and Eastern Europe at the Catholic University of Lublin are organizing an international academic conference under the title: “W kręgu Pereca/I. L. Peretz and his Circle”. The conference will be devoted to the writer’s life, work and both literary and spiritual legacy.

The conference, attended by scholars from Poland, Israel, France, Germany, Sweden, Great Britain, Australia, Canada and the United States, aims at presenting Peretz not merely as a writer, but also as an ‘institution’, owing to whom Warsaw at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries became the centre of Yiddish culture. To celebrate that, one of the conference sessions will be held entirely in Yiddish (with simultaneous translation into Polish). There will also be a reading of fragments of Peretz’ literary work in the original language, organized as part of “Perecjada” project. “Perecjada” has been running all year, and was prepared in cooperation with PSW Foundation for Promoting Contemporary Art, under the auspices of the Polish Society of Yiddish Studies.
