Experts from Poland and Ukraine on the culture of memory - we are launching a joint action
On 11-12 April 2019 in Kiev a meeting took place to initiate a Polish-Ukrainian project EDU-NET: EAST. Creating new leaders through informal education. It is an innovative program ad-dressed to experts from Poland and Ukraine who deal with the culture of memory.
The participants of that meeting developed a preliminary plan of action in Warsaw coming July. They visited Babi Yar, the site of mass extermination of the Kiev Jews which took place after the Nazis had entered the city, and Bykivnya, the site commemorating victims of Stalinist crimes.
The contemporary urban tissue is a meeting place of different narratives on the past and of dif-ferent memories. During the workshops to be held in Warsaw and Kiev experts will study the land-scape of memory of the Jewish residents in both cities. The program’s outcome will be a list of activities that can be undertaken in this area.
The program will be realized by the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies, the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute and POLIN Museum between March and September 2019.
The project is co-financed by the Polish-American Freedom Foundation within the Program RITA: Region in Transition which is being implemented by the Education for Democracy Foundation.
The first meetings of partners in Kiev and in Warsaw were made possible thanks to the Open Po-land Programme realized by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute as part of the Sharing Contacts - Shar-ing Knowledge project.
We have presented our activities and have planned future initiatives with the Ukrainians partners: Національний музей Тараса Шевченка (Taras Shevchenko National Museum) and the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies.
