We do encourage you to take a thematic guided tour of Here Is Muranów temporary exhibition. You will hear about locations and people that are no more, get acquainted with what came in their place and find out what it means to live in a place with such complex history.
The name Muranów evokes longing. Józef Szymon Belotti, a royal architect, built a residence in 1686 which — feeling homesick — he named Murano, after an isle in the Venetian lagoon he hailed from. Opposite Belotti’s residence was Muranowski Square, non-existent today, from which Nalewki, the district’s vibrant commercial street, used to run. Isaac Bashevis Singer described it as follows: "who could possibly count the manufacturing works located along the street […]. Next to them, houses of learning and Hasidic shtiblekh used to stand, invisible amid the stores, shops and artisan workshops that surrounded them." During the war, the Germans surrounded the area with a wall and created a Jewish ghetto, which they then razed to the ground in 1943. In the 1950s a new estate was built in its place, referred to—for the sake of propaganda — "an estate of bright apartments for the working class." Today, residents of Muranów come from different corners of Warsaw, Poland, and the world. They create a new identity of the district.

"Here Is Muranów" - guided tours for schools >>
We invite pupils from year 7 and 8 of primary schools as well as high school students to take a guided tour of Here Is Muranów temporary exhibition.
The exhibition tells a story of the past and present of Muranów — a district of Warsaw where Jews used to settle from the 19th century. It was here that the Germans established a ghetto during the Second World War; it is here that POLIN Museum is located today. During the tour, we will encourage young people to discover how the area full of greenery and magnates’ palaces turned into an urban district of a large city. Together, we will listen to the hustle and bustle of pre-war Nalewki Street; we will see how one-time Muranów’s residents used to live and how they earned their living. We will talk about daily life in the Warsaw ghetto, about its residents’ struggle for survival and about the resistance they managed to put up. We will see how a new estate — often referred to as "an estate of bright apartments for the working class" — rose on the rubble of the ghetto. We will compare this propaganda message to the existing reality. We will also follow the changes that have been taking place in the district since the fall of communism, and will listen to how today’s residents of Muranów envisage the future of their estate.
